Tunisia Flag
Tunisia Flag

The Tunisan flag was introduced by Hassan II, the Bey of Tunisia.

The red color was the color adopted by the Ottoman Empire who ruled Tunisia from late 16th century until 1881. It also came to represent resistance against Turkish supremacy.

  • The white color is for purity of heart
  • The star indicates the five rules of Islam
    1. Ashahada ( wards to enter in Islam the first time )
    2. Assalat ( Prayer )
    3. Azzakat ( Giving a part of the income to poor and deprived people )
    4. Assiyam ( Fasting one month each year )
    5. Al Hajj ( Visiting Mekka : Pilgrimage at least once in the hole life for those who can afford that only )
  • The crescent indicated the arabic months.

The Tunisian flag was originally adopted between 1831 and 1835, making Tunisia's flag one of the world's oldest flags. However, the Tunisian flag wasn't legislated in constitution until 1959, after Tunisia had gained independence from France on March 20, 1956. The current version of the Tunisian flag was adopted on July 3, 1999
